## About Amara Resort

Amara resort lies 2 km from the town of Amara and ~7 km from Slobozia, on the shore of a natural S-shaped lake left behind by an old bed of the Ialomița. The lake covers about 132 ha, is at most 3 m deep and has a layer of black sapropelic mud 30–60 cm thick, with a strong smell of hydrogen sulphide. Its water tastes very bitter because of magnesium and sodium sulphates.

People used it empirically for rheumatic pain before it was studied: the first chemical analysis of the water and mud dates from 1887, a bath service began in 1892 and the healing properties were confirmed scientifically in 1936. Salinity has dropped sharply since then, from almost 90 g/l in 1887 to a few grams per litre in the 1970s, after the water level was lowered through a drainage canal. The resort has nevertheless remained a place for cures for locomotor disorders, gynaecological conditions and some skin diseases.

### What you can see

The resort grew up around three large hotels, Lebăda, Ialomița and Parc, each with its own treatment centre offering mud packs, mineral-water baths, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and medical gymnastics. Along the lake shore are several landscaped beaches with sunloungers and parasols, among them Splendid, Mirceşti, Perla and Zorilor, and an arboretum stretches around them. In summer the Trofeul Tinereții de la Amara light-music festival is held here.

### Good to know

The beaches and treatment centres belong to private operators, each with its own rules and prices. We found no official timetable or price list for the resort as a whole. Do not confuse it with Lake Amara in Buzău County, which is a different lake.

## Don't miss

- Black sapropelic mud packs from Lake Amara, at the treatment centres in the hotels.
- Splendid beach, with rows of parasols on the lawn right at the water's edge.
- The view over the S-shaped lake, with reeds along the shore, towards the Bărăgan plain.
- The arboretum on the lake shore, good for a walk between treatments.

### Rules
