## About Băile Felix

Băile Felix is the largest spa resort in Romania that stays open all year: a settlement with almost 6,000 beds, 8 km south of Oradea, grown up around thermal springs that come out of the ground at 20–49 °C and never freeze. The waters are oligomineral, bicarbonated, calcic and sodic and, together with the local sapropelic mud, underpin treatments for rheumatism, peripheral neurological and gynaecological conditions and recovery after injury.

The warm water here is mentioned as far back as the Middle Ages, in a papal diploma of 1221 that speaks of "Termae Varadienses", but the resort takes its name from the monk Felix Helcher, who between 1711 and 1721 captured the main spring and built the first bathing facilities. The Apollo baths have been running since 1900. In recent years the centre of the resort has been rebuilt with seven million euros of EU funding — a pedestrian promenade, cycle lanes, fountains, new lighting — and around 300,000 tourists come here every year.

### What you can see

Entry to the resort is free: you stroll along the promenade in the centre, among hotels, parks and terraces, and pay only at the thermal baths. The largest is the Apollo-Felix complex, open all year, with ten thermal pools — relaxation pools, pools with hydromassage and waterfalls, a wave pool, two just for children — and five slides, behind the half-timbered pavilion with pointed turrets that is the emblem of the resort. At the southern edge, the President Aqua Park has another 20 indoor and outdoor pools and 8 slides.

At the heart of the resort lies the "Lake of Water Lilies" reserve, a thermal lake whose water never drops below 25–30 °C. On it flower the white water lily, the sacred lotus, whose pink blooms open from April to October, and the thermal water lily (Nymphaea lotus var. thermalis), a Tertiary relict declared a natural monument back in 1931. Bald cypresses grow on the bank, and turtles and exotic fish live in the warm water. A few hundred metres away, at the edge of the park, stands a wooden Orthodox church of 1785.

### Good to know

The thermal water lily grew in the wild in a single place in the world: Ochiul Mare, the lake of the Pârâul Pețea reserve at Băile 1 Mai, 2 km from here. Because of geothermal drilling the spring dried up completely after 2014, and the plant was saved by moving it, from 2015, into the Lake of Water Lilies at Băile Felix.

## Don't miss

- The thermal pools of the Apollo-Felix complex, which you step into through the steam even in midwinter.
- The half-timbered pavilion with pointed turrets at the entrance to the Apollo baths, the symbol of the resort.
- The sacred lotus in flower on the Lake of Water Lilies, its pink blooms opening in the morning from April to October.
- The thermal water lily, a Tertiary relict declared a natural monument in 1931 and saved from extinction here.
- The recently rebuilt pedestrian promenade in the centre, with fountains and cycle lanes.
