## About Băile Homorod

Băile Homorod (Homoródfürdő in Hungarian) is a spa and climatic resort in Harghita county, officially recognised as a tourist resort of local interest, lying at over 700 m in the valley of the Homorodul Mare, among spruce forests. It is a component locality of the town of Vlăhița, on the road between Odorheiu Secuiesc and Miercurea Ciuc. There are around 12 mineral springs within its bounds; the best known are Lobogó and Mária.

The waters were first analysed in 1820, and in the 19th century the springs were capped and villas, promenades and music pavilions were built; by the middle of the century Homorod was one of the most popular spas in Transylvania. In the early 20th century a pharmacist from Odorheiu Secuiesc leased the resort and added more villas, restaurants and sports grounds. After nationalisation the villas became holiday homes and then a camp for schoolchildren, until 1989; many have fallen into disrepair since. Since 2005 the Lobogó ski run has operated on the slope next to the centre.

### What you can see

The springs are capped along the valley, close to the road. The water of the Lobogó spring is carbonated, sodium-chloride, alkaline and rich in iron, and is recommended for drinking cures for low-acid gastritis and chronic liver and biliary conditions. At the entrance to the resort stands the **Chapel of St John the Baptist**, built in 1765 by Lázár János in thanks for his recovery, with a carved wooden statue under the porch. At the site called Földvár, west of the resort, are the ruins of Roman fortifications from the 2nd century.

In winter you can ski on the **Lobogó run**, an easy run with a drag lift, alongside which are a beginners' slope and a 100 m sledging slope for children. In summer you can ride the **alpine coaster**, almost 1 km long with four spirals, and swim at the outdoor pool.

### Good to know

The run only operates when there is snow, and the low altitude makes for a short ski season. Skis and sledges can be hired on site, but snowboards cannot.

## Don't miss

- The carbonated water of the Lobogó and Mária springs, drunk straight from the source.
- The Chapel of St John the Baptist, built in 1765 at the entrance to the resort, with the wooden statue under its porch.
- A day's skiing on the Lobogó run, a few steps from the centre of the resort.
- The ride down the alpine coaster, almost 1 km long, with four spirals.
