## About Telega Salt Baths

Telega, a village near Câmpina, was for centuries one of the salt mines of Wallachia. It first appears in records in 1562, when Prince Petru cel Tânăr confirmed a monastery's right to the "salt toll" here. The mine was also a place of punishment: convicts sentenced to hard labour cut salt next to a prison with two wings, from which the outlaw Iancu Jianu escaped in 1816. The Telega salt mines were abandoned in 1872.

The hollows of the old mines filled with rain and spring water, leaving salt lakes on the surface; local sources name them Mocanu, Palada, Stavrica, Lacul Dulce and Baia Centrală. Baths grew up around them and were popular above all between the wars, mainly for rheumatism. Analyses published by the local council give the water almost 277 g of salts per litre, most of it sodium chloride. There are no galleries to visit: all you see today is the salt water on the surface.

### What you can see

In summer two sites operate a few hundred metres apart in the village centre. **Băile Minerale Telega**, on the central lake, belong to the commune. After years of legal disputes with the previous operator they were closed from 2019; in 2024 they were leased for 49 years to the company Wise Finance Solutions and reopened in July 2025, with rebuilt banks, ramps into the water, changing cabins, showers, toilets and a medical room. Next door, the privately run **Complexul Șoimul** has its own salt lake with mineral mud, a salt therapy room, a restaurant and accommodation.

### Good to know

The baths open only in summer: in 2026, Complexul Șoimul on 15 June and Băile Minerale Telega on 18 July. The leaseholder must build a new spa complex on the site of the public baths by 2028; in early 2026 the project was still at the planning stage. The former Doftana prison, in the same commune, is a separate sight.
