## About Bălțătești Spa Resort

Bălțătești Spa Resort, in the commune of the same name in Neamț County, lies in a basin sheltered by hills, in the Salty Valley (Valea Sărată), about 12 km from Târgu Neamț. Its salt-water springs have been used for treatments since the early 19th century, and today the “Dr. Dimitrie Cantemir” Balneophysiotherapy and Medical Recovery Sanatorium, run by the Ministry of National Defence, operates here.

The fame of the waters spread across Moldavia, especially among women and children. Dr Dimitrie Cantemir, the baths' first qualified physician, is regarded as the founder of the resort, and the waters won gold medals at the international exhibitions in Paris (1901) and Bucharest (1903 and 1906). The money and interest these prizes brought led to two hotels, five villas and modern bathing facilities. In the 1970s the old resort was demolished and today's baths, hotels and catering block were built.

### What you can see

The resort is small and quiet, with the Narcisa, Topolița and Ozana hotels on Strada Florilor and the treatment centre, which has 75 bath cabins, 10 electrotherapy rooms and a hydrokinetotherapy pool of 85 m³. The waters are sodium chloride (salty) and sulphate waters from 14 springs, tapped in three areas: within the resort, on the Sărat stream and in the Arini valley. The air is rich in negative ions and the climate is mild, with an annual mean of 8.2 °C. The cure uses sodium chloride water baths, galvanic baths, mud packs, electrotherapy, massage and medical exercise.

### Good to know

The baths operate as a medical sanatorium: admission is by written request addressed to the commander, with a referral for insured patients, a pension-fund treatment voucher or self-payment. The Bălțătești hotel is being modernised, and patients are housed in the Narcisa, Topolița and Ozana hotels.
