## About Banloc Castle

Banloc Castle stands on the edge of the commune of Banloc, in the Banat, ~50 km from Timișoara. It was built in the 18th century, on older foundations, by Count Lázár Karátsonyi; sources give different years for its construction, between 1759 and 1793. The Karátsonyi family held the estate for more than a century and a half, and the building and park were embellished throughout the 19th century.

In 1935 the last count, Imre Karátsonyi-Keglevich, sold the estate, with castle and park, to Princess Elisabeth, sister of King Carol II and a former queen of Greece, who renovated the complex. After 1948 the building was in turn the seat of an agricultural enterprise, a forestry office, an old people's home, an orphanage and a school, while the statues in the park were destroyed and the archive and library burned. The earthquake of July 1991 brought down the attic and damaged the roof, leading to the ruin of today.

Since April 2025 the complex has been administered by Timiș County Council, for 25 years, taken over from the Banat Metropolitan Church. The first works, begun in March 2026, consist of a temporary repair of the roof to stop the deterioration; next come the design of a rehabilitation and the conversion of the complex into a cultural and tourist centre.
