## About Maria Theresia Bastion

The Maria Theresia Bastion, also written "Theresia Bastion" and known to locals as "the Fortress Bastion", is the only bastion left standing of the fortress the Habsburgs built in Timișoara after Prince Eugene of Savoy's army took the city in 1716. It was the first of the nine bastions to go up: work began in 1732 and finished in 1733–1734, and what we see today was first conceived as a ravelin surrounded by water, called the Provisions Ravelin after the food warehouse behind it. Since 1744 it has borne the name of Archduchess Maria Theresa.

When the fortress was demolished around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the bastion survived because it had good rooms along its whole length. It has housed workshops, warehouses, schools, a printing house and archives; after 1970 it received collections of the Banat Museum. It was restored between 2008 and 2010 with EU PHARE funds, in one of the largest works of its kind in south-eastern Europe, and reopened on 11 October 2010. It covers almost 2 hectares in the city centre, with two flanks more than 140 m long that meet at an acute angle to the east and enclose a broad courtyard.

### What you can see

The brick walls can be seen well from the park and from the moat in front of them, with their gun embrasures, and you can walk freely through the courtyard and the arcades of the flanks, no ticket needed; Strada Hector runs through the bastion. In the landscaped courtyard, with a stage and an underground space with glass walls, concerts and festivals are held, and in a kiosk in the corner stands a replica of the 1848 cannon cast at Reșița.

While Huniade Castle, the historic home of the National Museum of Banat, is under restoration, the museum has its administration and exhibitions in the bastion: "The Military History of Banat" (in the courtyard, with uniforms, weapons, maps of the fortress and a cannon), "Family Albums. The Bourgeoisie of Banat in the Modern Period, 1800–1947", "The Oravitzan Spaces" and the Popa's Museum, devoted to the world's fastest caricaturist, Ștefan Popa Popa's. The attic floors of the building on the west side host temporary exhibitions, and cafés and restaurants occupy the ground floor and the arcades.

### Good to know

The Timiș County Council leases part of the spaces by auction for cafés and restaurants, so what is in the arcades changes from year to year. The museum's exhibitions are ticketed, open Wednesday to Sunday; the museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
