## About Drapers' Bastion

The Drapers' Bastion guards the north-eastern corner of Brașov's medieval walled town, below the slope of Mount Tâmpa. Between 1450 and 1455 it was built and defended by the goldsmiths' guild, equipped with bombards brought from Prague, small cannons and arquebuses. In the 17th century its defence passed to the guild of cloth makers (sources give 1640 or 1646), from which the name comes; some texts also call it the Linen Weavers' Bastion. The walls were repaired in 1521–1522, consolidated in 1961–1962 and restored in the 2000s.

It has an elliptical plan, with a diameter of about 16 m and a height of about 20 m, and in the Middle Ages it was organised on four levels of timber galleries. Unlike the Weavers' Bastion, which is a museum with opening hours, this one cannot currently be visited inside.

### What you can see

From the outside you get a good view of the tower's massive silhouette, with its loopholes, gunports and the crown at the top, rising above the curtain wall that continues in both directions. You can walk along the path at the foot of the wall, in a quiet spot with easy access from the historic centre. On the side facing the road, the wall has an arched wooden door at ground level.

### Good to know

The interior is closed to the public. A metal exhibition tower was installed inside during the last intervention (2008–2011), and according to local press the museum set up there closed about ten years ago. In August 2025 Brașov City Hall signed the funding contract (almost 12 million lei, largely EU funds through the Central Region Programme 2021–2027) for consolidation, restoration of the plasterwork and crown, and conversion into an interactive museum and educational space; the project has an implementation period of 33 months. No reopening date has been announced.
