## About Roman Catholic Basilica of Oradea

The Roman Catholic bishopric of Oradea goes back to the Middle Ages, and the old cathedral stood in the fortress. It declined in the 16th century and was pulled down in later fighting. The present cathedral was begun in 1752 by Bishop Pál Forgách, to plans by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Ricca, with Il Gesù in Rome as its model. After Ricca's death the work passed to Franz Anton Hillebrandt of Vienna, who dropped the large dome from the plan and gave the façade a more restrained look. The church was consecrated on 25 June 1780 and remains the largest Baroque church building in Romania. In 1991 Pope John Paul II raised it to the rank of minor basilica.

It stands at the end of a Baroque ensemble on the edge of the centre, with the Baroque Palace beside it and the row of canons' houses along Șirul Canonicilor. In front of the entrance, on a plinth, is the statue of St Ladislaus, the king who founded the bishopric, put back in place in 2000.

### What you can see

Inside, the nave is vaulted, with frescoes and stucco. The main fresco was painted in 1778 by Johann Schöpf, while the rest of the frescoes date from 1878–1880, by Francisc Storno. The high altar, of Carrara marble, is from 1897 and neo-Renaissance in style, with statues of St Stephen and St Emeric; above it hangs the painting "The Assumption of the Virgin", painted in 1778 by Vincenz Fischer. The side altars, with paintings of 1778–1780, have a classicising simplicity.

The organ, a gift of Empress Maria Theresa, dates from 1777–1782 and has 42 stops. It was taken down in 2020 and restored over two years with European funds. Beside the side entrance are Gothic and Renaissance funerary monuments from the old cathedral in the fortress. The composer Michael Haydn, brother of Joseph, was the cathedral's musician from 1757 to 1763.

### Good to know

This is the diocese's working church, so quiet and services come first. The herm of St Ladislaus, a gilded silver bust holding a fragment of the king's skull, is kept in the basilica; it is carried out in procession only on major feast days and is not on display in between. The exhibition on the saint's cult is in the Visitor Centre in the Baroque Palace next door.
