## About Calvaria Church

Calvaria Church, dedicated to St Mary (Hungarian: Kolozsmonostori Kálvária-templom), stands on a hill in the Mănăștur district, on the site of a Benedictine abbey. Medieval tradition places its foundation in the second half of the 11th century, and the first reliable document is a papal bull of 1222. The abbey had the right to wear episcopal insignia, and until 1556 it also served as a place of authentication for documents, a kind of medieval notary's office.

The monastery was ravaged and rebuilt several times. After the invasion of 1658–1661 it was left uninhabitable, then used as a military depot, and much of the complex was demolished. The choir survived and was turned into a chapel. The nave was rebuilt in 1896. From 1948 to 1994 the church was used by the Romanian Orthodox Church, and since 1994 it has belonged solely to the Roman Catholic Church.

### What you can see

The church sits within high earth ramparts, traces of the medieval fortification. Access is through the south-east corner of the hill, between two ramparts, where the Calvaria chapel of 1831 and the bell tower designed by Károly Kós in 1922 stand. The Gothic choir ends in a polygonal apse and has tall windows; on the south-east face of the apse a bas-relief of a lion is set into the wall, placed there during the 19th-century rebuilding. The west façade has a Gothic portal with a statue of the Virgin above it. Inside is the organ built in 1792 by Samuel Mätz for the church in Daia, brought here after the Saxon community there dwindled.

### Good to know

The church belongs to the Roman Catholic parish, so a visit inside takes account of services. The hill, the earth ramparts and the grounds around the church can also be seen from outside.
