## About Holy Voivodes Wooden Church in Isverna

Isverna is a commune in northern Mehedinți, on the road that climbs from Drobeta-Turnu Severin towards the Mehedinți Plateau. The wooden church dedicated to the Holy Voivodes stands at the edge of the village among trees, recognisable by its large shingle roof and whitewashed walls. It is a simple nave-type church with no bell tower.

The sources disagree on the year: some give 1783, others 1836, based on a barely legible inscription. The main founder was Mihuță Sbârnă of Seliștea Izvernei, urged on by his daughter Sara, who was married to Priest Dumitrașcu of Cloșani. The year 1823 can still be made out on the icon of the Saviour. The church was thoroughly repaired in 1856, when the walls were plastered with mortar and the roof was redone, and the icons and paintings were cleaned and retouched in 1878 and again in 1892. It is a historic monument (LMI code MH-II-m-B-10349) and belongs to the Episcopate of Severin and Strehaia.

### What you can see

From outside, the wide shingle eaves and the small timber porch stand out. The interior keeps a folk painting in bright colours: rows of apostles and Gospel scenes on the vault, angels with scrolls, and saints painted directly on the walls. The wooden iconostasis has a tall painted panel at the top and a small access door in the middle, with steps on each side up to the balustrade line.

### Good to know

A tourism portal lists the church as temporarily closed, with no reason or reopening date given; no official information was found to confirm or explain this. Before setting out, it is worth checking with the Episcopate of Severin and Strehaia or the commune hall.
