## About Dormition of the Mother of God Wooden Church in Lăpugiu de Jos

Lăpugiu de Jos is a commune in the west of Hunedoara County, and its wooden church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God is one of the few churches of this kind in the county mentioned in specialist literature. The year 1765, inscribed on the small bell, is the marker of its age; the church replaced an older foundation mentioned in earlier censuses. It is a historic monument (LMI code HD-II-m-A-03356).

The building is made of timber logs, under a large shingle roof with gentle slopes, from which the bell tower rises. The tower has a wooden gallery on brackets, topped by a very sharp spire clad in shingle and finished with a cross; it can be seen from afar above the surrounding trees and the cemetery around the church.

### What you can see

Outside, the silhouette matters most: the roof coming down almost to the ground, the stone plinth and the tall tower against the hills. The interior, with a timber vault, keeps painting on boards, with scenes from the Passion cycle set in a register at the springing of the vault and separated by coloured bands, medallions of prophets with Cyrillic inscriptions and a scene of the Last Judgement. The painting is degraded, and sources differ about its author and date: some link it to the time of the church (1765), others to the first half of the 19th century.

### Good to know

On the "România Atractivă" programme page, the church is listed as "under rehabilitation" and visitable from the outside only. No public information was found about the works (contractor, funding or deadline), so the current state should be confirmed at the parish or the town hall before the trip.
