## About Wooden Church of St John the Baptist in Zătreni

The wooden church of Zătreni, a commune in Vâlcea County, in the Oltețu Valley area, was built in 1756, according to the year in the votive inscription read in 1926 by the researcher Corneliu Mateescu. It is a boyar foundation of the Zătreanu family, in their village of origin: the text of the inscription names the grand steward Ioan Zătreanu, together with Ioniță and the lady Catrina. It is dedicated to St John the Baptist. The building is a historic monument, LMI code VL-II-m-B-09976.

In 1796 the church was repaired and reconsecrated, under the dedication of St Nicholas, by the master of the pantry Ioan Gănescu and Catinca Găneasa. The inscription above the entrance door has since disappeared, and its text survives only through the 1926 transcription. A local publication gives the year 1766 instead of 1756, but the date from the inscription remains the one used in the monument lists. It is one of the large, well-built wooden churches south of the Carpathians, valued for its size and the quality of its carpentry.

### What you can see

From the road you see a very broad roof covered in shingles, with walls of wide logs standing on a brick base beneath it. At the entrance end is the open porch, with carved wooden posts and brackets and a plank parapet. On the sides, the log joints are visible at the corners and the windows are small.

Inside, in the timber-vaulted nave, the iconostasis stands out, with several rows of icons and carved, gilded decoration, as do the entrance doors. The published photos of the interior were taken in 2009.

### Good to know

The church remains a place of worship. In July 2026 the local press reported that work was under way on it, without saying what the work involves or how long it will last. No visiting schedule is published, so the interior may be locked; the exterior and the porch can be seen from the road.
