## About St Nicholas Church in Densuș

On a hill at the edge of the village of Densuș, about half an hour by car from Hațeg, stands one of the most unusual churches in the country. It is no more than about 6 × 6 m, yet it looks like nothing else: a narrow, tall tower rises from the middle of the nave, the eastern apse juts deep outwards, and the roof is made of stone slabs. The walls are built largely from blocks, columns, altars and tombstones taken from the ruins of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the Roman capital of Dacia, a few kilometres away.

There is no agreement on when it was built. Most sources place it in the 13th century (with additions in the 14th–15th centuries), some researchers push it back to the 10th–11th centuries, and the older tradition took it for a Roman monument, a tomb or a temple of Mars, later turned into a church; that idea has no archaeological proof. The first known written mention is from 1360. The church has been used by Orthodox, Reformed and Greek-Catholic communities, and today it is an Orthodox church dedicated to St Nicholas and the Prophet St Jeremiah.

### What you can see

Outside you can see the stone roof slabs, the brick courses in the cornices and two stone lions on the roof of the altar, probably reused from a Roman funerary monument. Inside, four pillars made of stacked Roman altars hold up the tower, and the walls keep medieval paintings: the painter Ștefan signed his work, and a Slavonic inscription gives the date of 23 October 1443. The wooden iconostasis dates from the late 18th century. Around the church is the old cemetery, with gravestones, and a newer wooden bell tower.

### Good to know

This is a working church, opened by the priest or by someone from the village; the hours given by sources differ, so ask before you go. No works or closures have been announced for 2025–2026; the last documented restorations were in 2003–2005.
