## About Sebeș Lutheran Church

The Lutheran church, known in German as the Stadtpfarrkirche Mühlbach, dominates the central square of Sebeș. In the 13th century Saxon settlers began a Romanesque basilica here, which was destroyed in the Mongol invasion of 1241–1242 and then rebuilt in the Gothic style. The building was fortified and surrounded by a curtain wall, and in the second half of the 14th century a tall choir with an ambulatory was added, a sign of the town's prosperity at the time.

Work stopped in 1438, when the town was sacked by the Ottomans, and resumed from 1453; the side aisles were widened and the nave raised. The town's craftsmen and guilds kept working on the church in the following centuries. The ensemble includes St James's Chapel, from around 1420, the former parish house, today the bell-ringer's house, and the curtain wall, all listed historic monuments. Today's Lutheran congregation has about 180 members.

### What you can see

Inside, the eye goes to the winged altarpiece from around 1520, about 13 metres high, the largest of its kind in the Lutheran Church in Romania. You can also see the aisles divided by rows of slender columns under Gothic vaults, the old organ, which bears the date 1791, and a penitence stone of 1760 hung on a chain, with three women's faces.

Outside, it is worth walking around the building: the buttresses and tall windows of the choir, the stone statues on the façades, the clock tower and St James's Chapel in the churchyard.

### Good to know

The church can be visited outside services, according to the parish's schedule, and is closed on Mondays. Hours and ticket price should be confirmed with the parish, especially before a group visit.
