## About Apold Fortified Church

Apold (Trappold in German) is a village in the valley of the Șaeș stream, south of Sighișoara, and its church stands on a hill in the middle of an enclosure that has survived almost intact. It began as a Romanesque basilica in the 13th century. In the 15th century the side aisles were raised and the building became a Gothic hall church with three aisles. Between 1504 and 1507 the west tower, the nave and the choir were given defensive storeys, and enclosure walls and towers were built around them.

After the Saxons left in the 1990s, the church was left without a congregation. Since 2003 it has been kept alive by the CasApold association, formed around Sebastian Bethge, a young man who came from Germany. With donations, volunteer work and a European project in 2010–2014, they stopped the buildings from decaying, and they now use them for traditional craft workshops, exhibitions and cultural events.

### What you can see

Of the stone enclosure, the outer wall and three defensive towers survive, while the traces of the inner wall, demolished in the 19th century, can be seen in the uncovered foundations. On the north side stands a storehouse with loopholes. The bell tower has a clock and a wooden defensive storey, and inside its roof you can see the old timbers.

In the church there are the Classicist organ-altar of 1821, a Gothic stone tabernacle, the pulpit and gallery from around 1760, a wooden baptismal font of 1686 and 14th-century frescoes on the triumphal arch: the five foolish and the five wise virgins. In the courtyard and the outbuildings there are exhibition spaces and a new garden, the Green Enclosure, opened in 2025.

### Good to know

The church is visited in season, at fixed hours, and only with an escort from the association; phone before you go. The interiors of the buildings in the enclosure have not yet been restored, so some spaces are used only for events.
