## About Axente Sever Fortified Church

Axente Sever, a village on the Târnava Plateau on the DN14 between Mediaș and Sibiu, was called Frâua (Frauendorf to the Saxons) until 1931. The Lutheran church, dedicated to All Saints, is first mentioned in 1322 and is a hall church with a square nave and a polygonal choir, built in the 14th century. It has a rare feature in Transylvania: the bell tower is not at the west end but above the choir, between choir and nave, as at Agârbiciu, Ocna Sibiului or Turnișor.

Towards the end of the 15th century, as Ottoman raids multiplied, the Saxons fortified the church: they raised the nave and choir by two defensive storeys with loopholes, joined the buttresses of the west façade with brick arches carrying openings for pouring pitch, and protected the portal with a portcullis, whose guide grooves are still visible today. The church is surrounded by an oval wall 6–8 m high, with a wall-walk brought up above the food stores.

### What you can see

From the courtyard you can see the enclosure wall with its loopholes and buttresses, the tower with its clock and the wall-walk on timber brackets, as well as the former stores where village families kept their grain and meat; Axente Sever also had a Bacon Tower, opened only on Sundays after the service, where each family marked its pieces of bacon. The restored stores house a museum of the fortress, with models, maps and objects about the life of the village Saxons, and guest rooms alongside.

Inside, the church has stone-ribbed vaults, two timber galleries from 1777 and, on the west gallery balustrade, musician angels painted in green and red. On one of the buttresses to the right of the entrance there is a relief of two hands holding a chalice, the Bible and the Tablets of the Law.
