## About Bunești Fortified Church (Bodendorf)

Bunești, which the Saxons called Bodendorf, is the seat of the commune of the same name, on the road between Rupea and Sighișoara. The Evangelical church in the middle of the village began as a late Romanesque basilica with three aisles, built towards the end of the 13th century. Later, when the village needed a refuge, the nave was narrowed by demolishing the side aisles and its walls were strengthened with buttresses linked by arches, above which ran a wall-walk. Around 1500 the choir was given a defensive storey with a row of openings for dropping pitch and boiling water.

The enclosure wall, built of river and quarry stone, still has its towers and gate tower, and along its inner face the row of covered chambers where families kept their provisions. The church's present look comes from the bell tower, whose brick upper part was added around 1847. The complex was restored in a European Union-funded project between 2010 and 2014 by the Fortified Churches Foundation.

### What you can see

Inside, the nave is tall and narrow, with a net-vaulted ceiling and timber galleries on two levels along the north side, built between 1680 and 1775 and painted with floral motifs by the Rössler family of painters. The pale green pews, the pulpit, the classicist altar of 1805 and a surviving fragment of an old fresco complete the interior. The old Rococo organ of 1805 was moved in 2007 to the Church of St Martin in Brașov. The large tower in the north-west, where the priest took shelter, has inscriptions on its walls from times of danger, among them the message of encouragement by Pastor Johannes Nösner, whose letters, read as Roman numerals, add up to the year 1680. Under the eaves of the grain chambers you can walk along the enclosure wall.

### Good to know

The church has no fixed opening hours: the courtyard and exterior can be seen at any time, but for the interior you need to look for the key in the village. The Fortified Churches Foundation gives the Evangelical parish in Rupea as the contact. It is customary to leave a donation for the upkeep of the church when visiting the interior.
