## About Cisnădie Fortified Church

In the centre of Cisnădie (Heltau to the Saxons), only 10 km from Sibiu, a bell tower with four corner turrets rises above a round fortress of reddish walls. The church began as a Romanesque three-aisled basilica with a west tower, built in the first half of the 13th century and dedicated to Saint Walpurga; it is first mentioned in documents in 1349. The west portal, with its palmette and twisted-rope decoration, and some of the windows survive from the Romanesque building.

From 1430 the community turned the church into a fortress against Ottoman attacks: two defensive walls, a water-filled moat that was later filled in, and towers above the choir, the apse and the side entrances. After the Turkish attack of 1493 the building was strengthened again, and in the 15th and 16th centuries it took on Gothic forms. The west tower has had its pointed roof since 1591, and its clock has been running since 1425, said to be the first tower clock in Transylvania. In 1795, after being struck by lightning several times, the tower was fitted with a copper lightning rod, regarded as the first in Transylvania.

### What you can see

It is worth walking around the fortress on the path between the walls, with the wooden wall-walk, the arches and the surviving towers, among them the Bacon Tower, the oldest, the School Tower and the Smiths' Tower, with the smiths' guild emblem on its wall. The former gate tower still shows traces of the drawbridge.

Inside the church you can see the 16th-century winged altarpiece, the Baroque pulpit, high-backed choir stalls and medieval frescoes uncovered during restoration after the Reformation had covered them with plaster. A Baroque organ stands in the gallery, and a small parish museum is housed in the building. According to the Fortified Churches Foundation, a hiding place within the walls, rediscovered in the early 20th century, can also be visited.

### Good to know

I found no visiting hours published by the parish: confirm the opening time by phone, and the bell ringer is the one who guides the tour of the fortress and the museum. This church is not Cisnădioara, the town's other fortified church, which stands on a hill ~4 km away.
