## About Cisnădioara Fortified Church

Above the village of Cisnădioara, a few kilometres from Sibiu, a small stone church stands alone on a rocky spur inside a defensive wall. Locals simply call it "the fortress", and guidebooks also list it as the "Romanesque Basilica of Cisnădioara", "Cisnădioara Fortress" or St Michael's Church; its dedication also gave the village its German name, Michelsberg.

Building was begun towards the end of the 12th century by the Catholic Provostry of Sibiu, which organised the religious life of the settlers who had come from the west. A charter of 1223 handed it to the Cistercian abbey of Cârța, which drew pilgrims here with papal indulgences; it is also the first written mention of the village. After the Reformation it lost its role as a place of pilgrimage and was long used as a storehouse; today it belongs to the town of Cisnădie and is looked after by the Lutheran parish. Unlike almost every other medieval church in Transylvania, it was never rebuilt in the Gothic style, which makes it one of the oldest and best-preserved Romanesque churches in the country. In August 2026 its roof was given emergency repairs with the help of more than 150 craftspeople and volunteers.

### What you can see

The walk up from the village brings you out onto a narrow plateau with a wide view over the village, the Sibiu Depression and, on clear days, the ridges of the Făgăraș Mountains. The church is a short basilica with three aisles, a square choir and a semicircular apse, built of rough stone. On the west side survives a **Romanesque portal** with four archivolts resting on colonnettes, flanked by blind arcades and carved in the mid-13th century. The interior is plain, with a timber ceiling and round arches; the apse holds the grave slabs of German and Austro-Hungarian soldiers killed in the fighting around Sibiu in the autumn of 1916.

Around the church stands the 13th-century enclosure wall, with traces of the wall walk and the towers. Scattered across the enclosure are **round boulders**, kept ready to be rolled down onto besiegers; according to tradition, every young man had to carry one up the hill before his wedding.

### Good to know

The church can only be reached on foot, along a sloping path with steps, in about 10–15 minutes from the edge of the village; comfortable shoes help, especially after rain.
