## About Dârjiu Fortified Church

Dârjiu, Székelyderzs in Hungarian, is a Székely village in the hills between the Târnava Mare and the Homorodul Mic, south-west of Odorheiu Secuiesc. At its centre stands a Gothic church built on the site of an older chapel, which the community turned into a stronghold around 1500: a defensive storey with inverted-keyhole gun loops was added above the vaults, and a square enclosure with walls about 5 metres high, corner bastions and a bell tower was raised around it, completed by the middle of the 16th century.

Unlike the other six churches in the UNESCO site "Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania", all built by German-speaking Lutheran (Evangelical) Saxons, Dârjiu was built by the Hungarian-speaking Székelys, who after 1568 embraced Unitarianism, the Protestant church born in Transylvania at that time. The fortress, however, follows the Saxon model, which is rare in the Székely Land. The ensemble became a World Heritage Site in 1999.

### What you can see

The church's treasure is its Gothic frescoes of 1419, whitewashed after the Reformation and rediscovered in 1887. The north wall shows the legend of Saint Ladislaus in five scenes: the king chases on horseback a Cuman who has abducted a girl, fights him, the girl helps him defeat the Cuman, and finally the hero rests with his head in her lap. On the south wall are saintly bishops, the Archangel Michael with the scales of Judgement and the Conversion of Saul, next to a Latin inscription in which the painter, master Pál, son of István of Ung, left his name and the year. The church also holds a brick inscribed in the old Székely runic script, one of the earliest surviving examples of it.

Along the inside of the enclosure wall, under a tiled roof, run the storerooms and grain chests of the village families. The tradition is still alive: bacon and hams are kept in the fortress towers to this day, and once a week the bell announces that the gate is open so that each family can collect its supplies.

### Good to know

The church is closed from November to March. In spring and autumn visits must be booked a day ahead, and guided tours in Romanian, Hungarian and English are only available in July and August.
