## About Ghimbav Fortified Church

In Ghimbav, only 8 km west of Brașov, the Lutheran church, once dedicated to Saint Peter, stands in the middle of a peasant fortress: a defensive wall with towers, a zwinger and, in the past, a moat. The settlement was founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights, and today's church, a Gothic basilica of the 15th century, replaced an older Romanesque building. The church tower was given loopholes, and the building became a stronghold.

The fortress was tested by war. Between 1599 and 1611 the village was burned to the ground twice and plundered twice more, and in 1612 the fortress had to be surrendered without a fight. In 1658 Crimean Tatars besieged it: the more than 900 villagers inside were promised free passage, but the promise was not kept, and the defenders were killed or taken to the gates of Brașov, where the townspeople ransomed 155 of them. The church was rebuilt in its original form, with the nave vault dating from 1775.

### What you can see

The most unusual sight is inside: **floral and ornamental painting from 1902** covers the walls and vaults of the Gothic interior in colour, a decoration that the Kirchenburgen Foundation considers unique in Transylvania. From the Gothic period the ground plan, the stone window tracery and the ribbed vault of the chancel have survived. A Neoclassical altar from 1848, with a statue of Christ giving his blessing, and the organ of 1786, built by Johannes Pause and set on the west gallery, complete the interior.

Outside you can see the clock tower with its pyramidal roof, the massive white towers of the enclosure, the entrance gate in the stone wall and the wide grassy courtyard beside the church.

### Good to know

The defensive wall and towers survive only in part, and the houses and storerooms built against the wall were pulled down around 1940. The church interior can be visited with the agreement of the Lutheran parish.
