## About Hărman Fortified Church

At Hărman (Honigberg), some 10 km from Brașov, the Saxons turned their church into a fortress that held out against sieges. The village first appears in the records in 1240, when King Béla IV granted it, together with three other parishes in the Burzenland, to the Cistercian abbey of Cârța; the three-aisled Romanesque basilica, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, was probably under construction at the time, and its eastern part in particular still keeps the plain look of Cistercian building sites.

From the 15th to the 17th century three rings of walls went up around it. The inner one, 12 m high with seven projecting towers, survives almost intact; in front of it stands the low 4.5 m wall that once lined the water-filled moat, which was filled in in 1814. The whole complex covers almost one and a half hectares. In 1612, when the army of Prince Gabriel Báthory laid waste to the Burzenland, Hărman was the only community that held out and stayed loyal to Brașov.

The bell tower, built into the church around 1300, is 56 m tall to its tip according to the parish, the tallest in the region. The four corner turrets added in 1794 showed that the village had the right to try and sentence criminals to death.

### What you can see

Hărman's treasure is the chapel in the eastern tower of the wall, built around 1300. Its walls and vault are covered with **Gothic frescoes from the 15th century**, centred on the Last Judgement, alongside scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, apostles and the Crucifixion. The paintings, which blend Western and Byzantine influences, were whitewashed after the Reformation and only brought back to light in the 1920s; they are one of the most complete ensembles of their kind surviving in a Saxon church.

On the outside walls of the church, above the side aisles, hang the provision stores, with timber balconies reached by movable ladders. Inside you can see the Baroque altar of 1787, the pulpit set straight into the wall, the backless benches of 1753 reserved for married women, an organ built by Brașov craftsmen and a collection of Anatolian carpets, brought in by trade, which cover the choir and the gallery. Within the walls there is also a small ethnographic museum and the wall walk of the enclosure.
