## About Homorod Fortified Church

Homorod (Hamruden in German) was founded in the 12th century by settlers from Flanders, and the church in the middle of the village, dedicated to Saint Peter, was built towards the end of the 13th century. Its plan is a rarity among Saxon churches: a Romanesque hall with a square choir and a semicircular apse, rather than the usual three-aisled basilica. Around 1500 the community turned it into a stronghold. A massive eight-storey keep rose above the old choir, and two rings of walls appeared around the church: an inner one with corner towers and a wall-walk, and a lower second one enclosing a zwinger.

The Romanesque chancel arch was walled up to support the tower, and the choir was left cut off from the nave. That is why its walls were never whitewashed and still hold fragments of wall painting from several phases, between the late 13th century and the late Middle Ages, regarded as among the oldest in Transylvania. Sources do not agree on their dating, so it is safest to see them as medieval paintings of the 13th to 15th centuries. In 1784, to make room for the community, the south wall of the nave was broken through and a new choir added, a rare solution in Transylvania. After a fire, the interior received its present Baroque furnishings in 1792–1793.

### What you can see

Inside, the eye goes to the flat wooden ceiling with green coffers and a central medallion, to the pews and galleries with floral decoration, and to the Baroque organ altar, with Christ on the cross between Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The fresco fragments are in the old choir, on the ground floor of the keep. In the yard you can usually climb the tower. From outside, the church is best seen from the triangular park opposite: a white wall, tiled roofs and the stone tower that dominates the whole complex.

### Good to know

The church has no fixed opening hours: it is usually locked, and the caretaker, whose contact is posted at the gate, comes to open it. For a safe trip, phone the parish beforehand. A European-funded project of nearly 13.1 million lei, signed in November 2024 by the Evangelical parish and Homorod commune, provides for structural work and restoration over 56 months, with completion estimated in July 2029. We could not confirm whether work has started or whether access is restricted, so check before you come.
