## About Meșendorf Fortified Church

Meșendorf (Meschendorf in German, Mese in Hungarian) is a village in the commune of Bunești, in southern Transylvania, between the upper reaches of the Hârtibaciu and the national road DN13. You reach the church by climbing the village's main lane, lined with fruit trees and old farmsteads. The village once belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Cârța, and the Evangelical church, built high up on the hill, dominates the whole village.

The hall church was built in the 14th century in an early Gothic style, with a tower on the west side and a polygonal choir. In 1495 the community fortified it: the tower received a wooden defensive storey, as did the choir and the nave, and an enclosure wall with a sentry walk and three towers was built around it. In the 16th century a zwinger, a second outer wall, was added on the south-west side. In the early 19th century, because of the danger of collapse, the vaults and the defensive storey of the nave and choir were demolished; the tower kept its medieval form. In 1888 part of the walls and one tower were pulled down to make room for the school.

The complex went through an EU-funded restoration project in 2010–2014 and has been looked after since then, with the support of the Meșendorf Saxon hometown community and the Fortified Churches Foundation.

### What you can see

From outside you can see the enclosure wall, the two surviving towers and the bell tower with its wooden defensive storey. Inside, the gallery on three sides has panels painted in 1765 by Georg Rosenauer in a naive manner, with floral motifs and landscapes with buildings. The altar combines a winged altarpiece from 1693 with an organ from 1914, and the pulpit once held an hourglass made of four glass cylinders, which the pastor and the congregation used to time the sermon. One bell bears the year 1515.

### Good to know

The church is usually locked, and no opening hours are posted in any official source. For contact, the Fortified Churches Foundation lists the Evangelical parish in Rupea. The village lies at the end of a local road, away from the main tourist routes, so it is very quiet. Do not confuse it with the church in Criț, a neighbouring village, or with the one in Bunești (Bodendorf).
