## About Viscri Fortified Church

Viscri is one of the best-preserved Saxon villages in Transylvania, and its fortified church stands on the hill above it. Its story begins before the Saxons: excavations in the 1970s showed that today's church incorporates a small hall chapel with a semicircular apse, built by a Székely community in the early 12th century. German settlers took it over and enlarged it, and in the 13th century a stone keep was raised to the west, probably the residential tower of a family of local counts (Gräfen).

Around 1500 the church was joined to the tower and turned into a stronghold: the tower gained a defensive storey and the nave a fighting level, removed in 1743. The enclosure wall, about 7 metres high, was strengthened step by step until the 18th century with towers, bastions and a second ring of walls. Once the dangers had faded, the wall-walk was replaced by a covered gallery where each family kept its grain chest. Since 1999 the village and its church have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania".

Viscri has also become known through the work of the Mihai Eminescu Trust, which since 2000 has helped villagers restore their homesteads using traditional techniques, and through King Charles III, who owns a house in the village.

### What you can see

The church is plain: a coffered ceiling from 1743, timber galleries painted in the early 18th century, old pews with plant motifs and a stone font. Within the walls you can climb the gate tower and the top level of the south bastion, which looks out over the whole village and its colourful houses lined along the street. In the east bastion, also called the "bacon tower", villagers kept their smoked bacon until the 1960s. Beneath the covered gallery on the wall there is a small village museum with Saxon costumes, furniture, textiles and pottery, and next to it an exhibition of terracotta.

### Good to know

The church is undergoing a major restoration: since 14 September 2026 its interior and the main tower have been closed to visitors, most likely until 2027. The museum, the terracotta exhibition, the gate tower and the south bastion remain open, with a reduced ticket. Leave the car in the car park at the entrance to the village; in summer the village gets very busy.

## Don't miss

- The view over the village from the top level of the south bastion.
- The "bacon tower", the east bastion where villagers stored their bacon until the 1960s.
- The covered gallery on the wall, with the families' grain chests and the village museum beneath it.
- The 1743 coffered ceiling and the painted timber galleries inside the church (closed until the restoration ends).
