## About Ighiu Reformed Church Ensemble

The village of Ighiu, first mentioned in documents as early as 1206, has one of the oldest church ensembles in the area at its centre. The Hungarian Reformed community (Magyarigen, in its own language) kept a church here, surrounded by an oval defensive enclosure dated to the 15th–16th centuries. Today's church was built between 1781 and 1783, after the old one was judged too small, and its tower was added in 1792. Classed as Late Baroque with touches of Rococo, it has three naves and seats about 300, and the broad hall is decorated with stucco.

Only fragments of the medieval enclosure survive: the wall was largely demolished around 1900, and the bastion at the entrance ended up built into a two-storey building with shops on the ground floor. Next to the church stands the parsonage, whose first phase dates from 1485. In 1752 it was rebuilt by Péter Bod himself (1712–1769), pastor at Ighiu from 1749 until his death, a scholar and literary historian regarded as the leading Protestant man of learning in 18th-century Transylvania. His grave is in the churchyard.

### What you can see

The first view of the site is the church's white clock tower, seen between the houses over the stone arch of the old entrance. Inside the enclosure you can see remains of the medieval wall, the parsonage with its timber gallery upstairs and the river-stone monument to Péter Bod, raised by the parish 200 years after his death. Inside the church, the grey Dalmatian marble pulpit with gilded acanthus leaves and the balconies with carved parapets are among the notable features; the organ was built by János Hán.
