## About Fortified Reformed Church of Ocna Sibiului

The Reformed church of Ocna Sibiului stands in Ocna Sibiului, on a spot where, according to some sources, a monastery once stood. The present Romanesque building, a three-aisled basilica, was built in the second half of the 13th century, with a square choir topped by a massive tower and a semicircular apse. Until the 16th-century Reformation it was a Roman Catholic church; it then passed to the Hungarian Reformed (Calvinist) community, and Gothic elements were added later, among them the net vaults of the central nave.

The church is surrounded by a precinct wall with buttresses, part of its defences in uncertain times. The clock in the tower has been running since 1787. Today's Reformed community is small and shrinking, and the monument has been included in a restoration project funded through the "Centru Region" programme.

### What you can see

From the street you see the precinct wall, with its brick and stone sections left exposed, and the clock tower with its pyramidal tiled roof. Inside, attention goes to the Gothic net vaults and to the fragments of wall painting, among them a scene of 1522 attributed to the painter Vincentius Cibiniensis. The pastor's stalls and the pulpit canopy of 1515, a south portal with a bas-relief, and the curator's pew of 1767 have also survived.

### Good to know

The church is part of the project "Restoration of the Reformed Church in Ocna Sibiului" (SMIS code 325924), approved by the town council in March 2025 and amended in March 2026. No public information on the progress of the works was found, so access to the interior and the churchyard may be limited. Visiting hours are not published.
