## About Fortified Roman Catholic Church of Cârța

The Roman Catholic church of Cârța (Csíkkarcfalva in Hungarian) stands on a rocky hill at about 735 m above sea level, above the road that runs through the village. Its body was raised between 1350 and 1450, probably on the site of an older Romanesque church, and the Gothic sanctuary has remained largely unchanged. The rest of the building was rebuilt and decorated in the Baroque style in 1796; the last major restoration dates from 1958. The church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God.

In the Middle Ages, Székely communities defended their churches against Ottoman and Tatar raids. At Cârța, the hill was ringed by an enclosure wall, built mainly on the west side, where the terrain gives the church no natural protection; on the east, the rock makes a wall unnecessary. In places the wall reaches about 8 m in height and is so thick that rooms were fitted inside it. Medieval towers can be seen at the entrance to the yard and near the church, one of them serving as the bell tower. The church and the fortified enclosure are historic monuments, part of the ensemble with LMI code HR-II-a-A-12774.

### What you can see

From the road, the church's silhouette can be seen from afar: the white tower with a clock and pointed roof, the stone wall and the red tiled roof above it. You climb the hill to the fortified yard, where the defensive wall, the towers and the older gravestones around the church can be seen.

Inside, the Baroque nave opens onto the Gothic sanctuary, with stone ribs and stained glass. The main altar, Neo-Gothic, dates from the second half of the 19th century; there are also two side altars and a late Baroque pulpit. The oldest piece inside is the carved Gothic font, goblet-shaped, from the second half of the 15th century.
