## About Roman Catholic Church of St George in Ciucsângeorgiu

The Roman Catholic church of St George in Ciucsângeorgiu (Csíkszentgyörgy in Hungarian) stands on the left terrace of the Fișag stream, at about 757 m above sea level, in the heart of the commune in Lower Ciuc. The village appears in records from 1332 as "de Sancto Georgio", and the beginnings of the church are dated to around 1336. Its present form comes from the late Gothic rebuilding of the 15th–16th centuries; it is regarded as one of the largest and oldest Gothic churches in the area.

In the 17th century a defensive wall with loopholes was raised around it, dated to 1673 by an inscription; villagers took shelter here during Tatar raids, and in 1661 the village was burned. The bell tower received a Baroque belfry in the late 18th century, perhaps the early 19th, and in 1821 a side wing was added on the south side of the nave.

### What you can see

The enclosure wall, with the two-storey gate tower in the north-west corner, and the church tower, whose loopholes have a shape rarely found in Székely Land. Inside are the Gothic sanctuary, with ribbed vaults and carved keystones, the mid-18th-century pulpit, the high altar of 1796 with two wooden statues, and the organ of 1865. The courtyard holds the Rosary chapel and a small cemetery.
