## About Fortified Roman Catholic Church of St Michael in Mihăileni

The Roman Catholic church of Mihăileni (Csíkszentmihály in Hungarian), dedicated to the Archangel Michael, stands on a small hill in the middle of the village, near the railway station. The village is first recorded in 1332 as S. Michaele, and the present church is usually dated between 1457 and 1467, on the site of an older, probably Romanesque, building. It was damaged by the Ottomans in 1661 and by the Tatars in 1694, and in 1819 it was extended with the south wing, in Baroque style. It is among the county's historic monuments (LMI code HR-II-a-A-12875).

The church has a single nave and a vaulted polygonal sanctuary, and the slender stone tower is regarded as one of the finest examples of the Gothic Ciuc-type tower. The church is surrounded by an enclosure wall 2.5–3 m high, with loopholes, built in the 17th century and with two entrances; at one corner of the wall stands a small building once used as a chapel.

### What you can see

From outside you can see the tower with its pointed roof, the white enclosure wall and, in the yard, a stone cross carved with the word "Siculicidium", linked to the tradition of the 1764 Siculeni massacre. On the north wall of the nave a fresco of the Calvary survives from the first decades of the 15th century, and nearby fragments of a fresco of the legend of St Ladislaus have come to light. The main altar, late Baroque, has a painting of St Michael after the composition by Guido Reni.
