## About New St George Church

New St George Church stands in Sfântul Gheorghe Square, at the edge of the Old Town, where Ion C. Brătianu Boulevard meets the Lipscani area. It was built in 1705–1707 by the prince Constantin Brâncoveanu, on the site of an older church, and consecrated on 29 June 1707, in the presence of the princely family and several patriarchs. It is called "New" to tell it apart from Old St George, a foundation of the 15th century. It is the prince's last foundation.

The church came through the earthquakes of 1802 and 1838, and the fire of 1847 burned the inn and the buildings around it. It was rebuilt in 1851–1855 to the plans of the architect Xavier Villacrosse, then restored in the second half of the 20th century, with the participation of the architect Ștefan Balș, towards its Brâncoveanu appearance. The painting was redone in fresco, in stages, from 1998 to 2011.

In the founder's crypt lies the tomb of Constantin Brâncoveanu, executed in Constantinople in 1714 and canonised in 1992; his relics, taken out in 2014, are kept in a reliquary in the church. The relics of his wife, Maria (Marica), canonised in 2025, are here as well.

### What you can see

The entrance is through an open porch on twelve stone columns with floral capitals, set on a carved parapet. Under the arches you can see the frescoes of the porch, and on the façade above, an icon in mosaic. Inside are the Brâncoveanu iconostasis of carved and gilded wood, the wall paintings and, on the right of the nave, in an oak canopy, the reliquary with the right hand of Saint Nicholas, given to the church in 1599 by Michael the Brave and Lady Stanca. In front of the church stand the statue of Constantin Brâncoveanu, by Oscar Han, and the Kilometre Zero monument.
