## About Bologa Fortress

Bologa Fortress (Sebesvár in Hungarian) stands on a high hill near the village of Bologa, in Poieni commune, at the foot of the Vlădeasa Mountains above the Crișul Repede valley. It was most probably built towards the end of the 13th century as a royal stronghold guarding the road between Oradea and the heart of Transylvania. Its first written mention, as *Sebuswar*, dates from 1304. In 1399 King Sigismund of Luxembourg gave it to Mircea the Elder, ruler of Wallachia.

Its strategic position stayed important for centuries, including after the Ottomans took Oradea, and in hard times it also served as a refuge for local people. Its military role ended in the early 18th century: during Rákóczi's uprising the fortress was blown up so that it would not fall into the hands of the insurgents. The tower and part of the walls remained standing, and in the mid-20th century the tower lost its last wooden element, its roof.

Between April 2018 and November 2020 the Poieni commune council, together with the National History Museum of Transylvania, consolidated the ruin. Vegetation was cleared from the walls, missing masonry was filled in, and a metal access staircase was installed in the fortress.

### What you can see

This is a stone ruin, not a fortress with rooms to tour. The best-preserved part is the round tower that dominates the hill, followed by thick stretches of wall, some of them several metres high. On site there are an access staircase, benches and information panels, and from the top you look out over the Crișul Repede valley and the surrounding hills.

### Good to know

The fortress is visited on foot, along a path that climbs the hill from the village. On the opposite bank of the river, less than a kilometre away, stands the Roman fort of Resculum, a separate attraction. The photos below predate the 2018–2020 works.

## Don't miss

- The round tower, the best-preserved part of the fortress, seen up close from the path.
- The thick walls consolidated in 2018–2020, with the metal access staircase into the enclosure.
- The view from the hill over the Crișul Repede valley and the foot of the Vlădeasa Mountains.
- The Roman fort of Resculum, on the opposite bank of the river, less than a kilometre away.
