## About Brad Gold Museum

The Gold Museum in Brad holds a collection of native gold, that is, gold just as it was taken from the veins of the Metaliferi Mountains, the southern part of the Apuseni range, without ever passing through a jeweller's hands: leaves, wires, dendrites, grains and crystals. Many pieces grew into shapes that recall animals, plants or objects. The museum belongs to the national company Minvest Deva, which also manages the area's former state mines.

For about five years the building stood closed because of a legal dispute, and the pieces were kept at the State Treasury. The museum reopened in December 2012 after renovation. Besides gold, the collection also shows the natural compounds of gold with tellurium, such as sylvanite and nagyagite, minerals first described from deposits in the Apuseni Mountains.

### What you can see

The stars are the named gold pieces: the "Lizards", two long gold dendrites laid out on red velvet, then the "Puppy" and the "Duckling", made of leaf-like and moss-like gold, the "Fern", the "Map of Romania" and "Eminescu's Quill". Next to them are ore samples in which the gold is finely dispersed or locked in other minerals.

Another part of the exhibition is a collection of minerals from many countries, arranged by composition and physical properties, for which the museum offers an online audio guide, mineral by mineral. There are also archaeological finds from the Brad–Crișcior area, old tools for mining and processing ore, and photographs from the gold mines. For the Roman galleries and mining at Roșia Montană, the [Gold Mining Museum](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/muzeul-mineritului-rosia-montana), about 48 km away, is also worth a visit.
