## About Cuza Vodă House in Galați

The house on Alexandru Ioan Cuza Street was built in the early nineteenth century by the parents of the future ruler, Ioan and Sultana Cuza, and Alexandru Ioan Cuza lived here in childhood and youth and later as pârcălab (local governor) of Galați. The year of construction varies by source (the press gives 1827, when Cuza's father was pârcălab). The house was later sold several times and put to various uses. In 1937 the "Casa Cuza Vodă" Association was formed, bought it by public subscription, and on 24 January 1939 the museum of the same name opened here, the first in Galați.

Today the house is a branch of the "Paul Păltănea" History Museum. After almost seven years of consolidation and restoration, largely with European funds, it reopened on 24 January 2024, on the 165th anniversary of the Union of the Principalities. The works included strengthening the monument, new display cases and panels, marble floors, lighting, climate control and surveillance.

### What you can see

The permanent exhibition in the main building has two threads: the personality of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, and Galați in the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth, when the city was an important commercial, economic and cultural centre of modern Romania. The press has also mentioned pieces of original furniture preserved from the house.

In the yard, in a garden with paths and benches, stands a bust of Cuza, a historic monument in its own right. The house also hosts temporary exhibitions from time to time.

### Good to know

The History Museum has several sites in Galați; this is the "Cuza Vodă" House at 80 Alexandru Ioan Cuza Street, not the Collections House or the Lapidarium. The County Council has announced a cross-border project (with partners from Hîncești district, Republic of Moldova) to landscape the garden in the style of Cuza's time; I found no dates for the start of the works or any access restrictions.

## Don't miss

- The permanent exhibition on Alexandru Ioan Cuza, in the house where he lived.
- Galați between 1850 and 1930, as a commercial and cultural centre, in new display cases and panels.
- The bust of Cuza in the garden of the house, a historic monument in its own right.
