## About Filipescu-Cesianu House – Museum of Ages

The house at the corner of Calea Victoriei and Sevastopol Street, near Victoriei Square, was formed by joining two older boyar houses of 1846–1850, which sheltered families of the Romanian aristocracy, among them Iancu Filipescu and Maria Ghica Filipescu. In 1892 the lawyer Constantin Cesianu extended it with the help of the architect Leonida Negrescu, who joined the two buildings, added the exterior decoration and the mansard roof and laid out the surrounding garden. The result is one of the few Belle Époque aristocratic residences in Bucharest that has stayed close to its original design.

In 1935 the property was sold to the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company, and from 1939 it passed into the city's ownership; although it was earmarked for a museum from 1940, for a long time the building served as offices and storerooms. After restoration with European funds, it received the “Museum of Ages” exhibition in December 2016. The house is a historic monument (LMI code B-II-m-B-19870) and part of the Bucharest Municipality Museum.

### What you can see

**“The Museum of Ages – from childhood to old age”** is a circular route through three hundred years of family life, childhood and intimacy, seen through the urban home in Bucharest. The ground floor covers the 18th and 19th centuries, the upper floor the 20th. Reconstructed period interiors alternate with rooms displaying furniture, table services, costumes and clothing accessories, and household objects, and how they changed over time.

Besides the permanent exhibition, the house hosts temporary thematic exhibitions, symposia and events. At the back, the garden of the house, closed for many years, is now a recreation space, with a lapidarium and a stage for concerts and performances. The façade is also worth a look, with richly decorated window surrounds, lion masks and carved heads.

The Filipescu-Cesianu House is only one of the sites of the Bucharest Municipality Museum; the others, among them the [Șuțu Palace](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/muzeul-municipiului-bucuresti), have separate hours and tickets.
