## About George Enescu Memorial House in Liveni

George Enescu was born on 19 August 1881 in Liveni, then in Dorohoi County, the only one of Costache and Maria Enescu's eleven children to survive childhood. His father played the violin and his mother the guitar, and he learned his first notes on the pianino brought from his grandparents' house in Mihăileni. Today's house, small and with a wooden porch, is not the original: it was rebuilt on the foundations of the birth house, and sources give different years for the opening of the museum (between 1955 and 1968; it was reorganised in 1970). The family later moved to the manor at Cracalia, destroyed by fire in 1947; some of the objects on display were saved from there.

The museum belongs to the Botoșani County Museum. In a cross-border EU-funded project on history and music ("History and Music – Values that Bring Us Together"), the house was restored; it was re-consecrated on 4 May 2025, 70 years after the composer's death.

### What you can see

The house has five rooms. The most important are the parlour with the pianino, the young Enescu's room and the kitchen, which was also his parents' bedroom. On display are the family's furniture, Moldavian rugs, the stove on which the composer is said to have been born, objects from his childhood (a toy violin, a drawing set, a toy Father Christmas and drawings he made), photographs of his parents and of the house at Cracalia, property deeds of Costache Enescu, scores from his youth and photographs of Enescu with the great musicians of his day.

In the yard there is a bust of the composer, and around it you see the open landscape of hills and fields of northern Moldavia.

### Good to know

In recent years the house has had temporary closures announced on the museum's website (for example 20–26 November 2025 and 15 July – 4 August 2026); organised groups can book a visit even then. Do not confuse it with the George Enescu National Museum in Bucharest, the Luminiș Villa in Sinaia or the George Enescu Memorial Museum in Dorohoi.

## Don't miss

- The pianino in the parlour, the one Enescu began to play on as a child.
- The young Enescu's room, with the toy violin, the drawing set and his drawings.
- The stove in the kitchen, on which the composer is said to have been born.
- The photographs of Enescu with the great musicians of his time and the scores from his youth.
