## About Ion Creangă Memorial House in Humulești

The house in Humulești was built around 1830 by Petrea Ciubotariul, Ion Creangă's grandfather (the List of Historic Monuments dates it to 1833), and later given to his son Ștefan, the writer's father. Creangă was born here in 1837 and lived here, with interruptions, until 1855, when he left for the seminary at Socola, near Iași. It is the very house described in “Memories of My Boyhood”: the one with the hoopoe from the lime tree hidden in the attic and the bench on which the evening gatherings were held.

The house stayed in the family until the middle of the last century. In 1944 Sofia Grigoriu, the writer's niece, donated it to the General Association of Teachers of Romania, and it has been a memorial museum since 1951. It is a historic monument (LMI code NT-IV-m-A-10763) and belongs to the Neamț National Museum Complex. Between 2022 and 2024 the Neamț County Council restored it with European funds, and the museum reopened on 2 June 2024, with an exhibition rearranged to show how a peasant house looked in the mid-19th century.

### What you can see

The house is small and low: walls of logs plastered with clay and whitewashed, a narrow porch and a tall shingle roof. Inside are a living room, an entrance hall and a pantry from which you climb into the attic. In the living room you see the large stove with a sleeping ledge, the pole with the parents' Sunday clothes, Smaranda Creangă's painted dowry chest, the bench, the dish rack, the small table with three-legged stools and the weaving and spinning tools, plus a book of hours from 1817.

In the yard and in a new exhibition building, photo-documentary panels, reproductions and a touchscreen tell the story of Creangă's life and work and of the village crafts of his time.

### Good to know

Do not confuse the house with the Bojdeuca in Iași, where Creangă lived as an adult. The “Ion Creangă” theme park, with characters from his stories, is a separate attraction right next to the museum.

## Don't miss

- Smaranda Creangă's painted dowry chest, the writer's mother's, in the living room.
- The pantry leading up to the attic where Nică hid the hoopoe from the lime tree.
- The stove with its sleeping ledge and the bench where the winter gatherings were held.
- The tall shingle roof, redone in the 2022–2024 restoration, seen from the yard.
