## About Vălul Miresei Waterfall

Vălul Miresei Waterfall (the Bride's Veil, also called Răchițele Waterfall) is the best-known waterfall in the Apuseni Mountains and in Transylvania. The water of the Stanciului stream drops about 30 m in two tiers down a dark rock wall on the eastern side of the Vlădeasa massif, at roughly 1,000 m of altitude. The upper tier is short and narrow; the lower one, much longer, spreads across the rock in white threads that unravel like a veil, which is where the name comes from. At the base the water has carved a deep plunge pool some 10 m across.

Local legend has it that a bride fell from the steep cliffs of the valley and her veil stayed caught on the wall; the wedding party stopped there and wept until the waterfall was formed. The more prosaic explanation is the shape of the fall, which looks like a veil laid over the rock.

The waterfall sits at the head of the valley, inside the Apuseni Natural Park, and is reached by an easy one-kilometre walk along a forest track that climbs through the Stanciului gorge, between limestone walls and spruce forest. It is just as popular in winter, when the wall freezes into a sheet of ice: climbers from Cluj train here, and an ice-climbing competition is held every February.

### What you can see

The forest track ends right in front of the waterfall, where a wooden footbridge over the stream and a shelter with benches give the best view of both tiers. On the rocks at its foot you can get right under the curtain of water, carefully, as the stone is wet. A marked path climbs up the left side of the fall to the top, with a view of the upper valley. Longer trails start here too, towards Lespezi Peak and Pietrele Albe, a limestone plateau on the Vlădeasa slope, and nearby is the Caves Circuit, with Șușman Cave.

### Good to know

The last kilometre, from the car park to the waterfall, is closed to cars: you are in a natural park, and rangers and foresters fine those who drive up. In spring, at snowmelt, and after rain the waterfall is at its fullest; by late summer it thins out. In winter the valley road is icy, and locals advise leaving the car in the village and walking up. In summer vipers bask on the sunny rocks; do not come in sandals.

## Don't miss

- The lower tier of the fall, unravelling in white threads over the black rock, seen from the wooden footbridge at its base.
- The deep plunge pool at the foot of the waterfall and the rocks beneath the curtain of water, a few careful steps away.
- The Stanciului gorge, which the forest track follows from the car park, with limestone walls above the spruces.
- The path climbing the left side of the waterfall to its top, with a view of the upper valley.
- The frozen wall in February, when the waterfall turns into a sheet of ice for climbers.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** from Cluj-Napoca, take the DN1 (E60) to Huedin (~50 km), then the DN1R and DJ108C via Mărgău to Răchițele; in the village centre a sign points right onto the paved Stanciului valley road, narrow and winding, which ends after ~5 km at the car park. In all ~80 km and ~1h30 from Cluj-Napoca, ~32 km and ~45 min from Huedin, ~120 km and ~2h30 from Oradea. From the car park it is a ~1 km walk, 15–20 minutes, on the forest track marked with a red dot.

**Public transport:** train to Huedin (Cluj-Napoca – Oradea line), from where there is no regular service to the waterfall; minibuses to Mărgău and Răchițele are infrequent and drop you in the village, ~6 km from the falls. In practice it is visited by car or on an organised tour from Cluj-Napoca.

### Where to park

At the end of the paved Stanciului valley road, at the entrance to the gorge, there is a proper car park plus a small spot for 4–5 cars right at the forest-track barrier. Visitors in 2023 paid nothing; older guides mentioned 10 lei a day, so bring cash just in case. On summer weekends come in the morning. Beyond the barrier driving is banned and fined.

### Fees & discounts

The waterfall and the trail are free; at last reports there was neither a visitor fee nor a parking charge. The Apuseni Natural Park has no entry ticket at the waterfall.

### Rules

You are in the Apuseni Natural Park: the car stays at the car park, you keep to the track and marked paths, no fires or camping at the waterfall, and rubbish leaves with you. The rocks at the foot of the falls are wet and slippery and the forest track is gravel: wear shoes with good grip, not sandals (there are vipers on the rocks in summer). Dogs on a lead. Ice climbing needs full equipment and experience; on the trails to Lespezi and Pietrele Albe there are sheepdogs.

### Facilities

Shelter with benches and a wooden footbridge at the waterfall · snack and coffee stalls at the car park, in season · guesthouses and cabins on the Stanciului valley and in Răchițele · Răchițele mountain rescue (Salvamont) post in the valley · no step-free access · weak mobile signal in the gorge
