The waterfalls of Romania are mostly mountain falls: they drop from glacial hanging valleys in the Făgăraș and Rodna mountains, over limestone steps in the Apuseni and the Banat, or over volcanic rock ledges in Maramureș and Harghita. The highest are not necessarily the most spectacular; many of the most photographed are small falls with water all year round, over moss-covered tufa. The flow depends a lot on the season: in spring, with the snowmelt, they are in full force, and by late summer some nearly dry up. [Bâlea Waterfall](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/cascada-balea), on the Transfăgărășan, and [Cailor Waterfall](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/cascada-cailor) in the Rodna Mountains are among the highest in the country.
