## About Bethlen-Haller Castle

On the edge of the village of Cetatea de Baltă, on a hill above the Târnava Mică, stands a castle with four round towers and conical roofs — the silhouette that ended up on the labels of Jidvei wines. Today's building dates from the first half of the 17th century, most probably raised between 1622 and 1624, when the estate belonged to István Bethlen of Iktár, brother of the Transylvanian prince Gábor Bethlen. The plan is typically Renaissance: a compact rectangular block with no inner courtyard, a round tower at each corner and a fifth, octagonal tower set against one of the side façades, which houses the wooden staircase. Its likeness to the residences of the Loire Valley earned it the nickname "the Chambord of Transylvania".

The estate passed through the hands of more than forty-five owners, and the castle now carries the names of its first and last noble masters. Miklós Bethlen renovated it between 1770 and 1773, adding Baroque decoration, a new staircase, a chapel and a French garden with a maze and an orangery. The Haller family held it until nationalisation in 1948, and under communism the castle served in turn as a granary, an office building and a sparkling-wine plant, losing its original furniture and interior decoration. Restituted after 1989, it was bought in 1999 by the Necșulescu family, owners of the Jidvei winery, on condition that they restore it; the works ran from 2003 to 2019.

### What you can see

The visit is guided only and begins in the great reception hall on the ground floor, where a Renaissance stone portal opens the way to the stair tower and the Haller family coat of arms hangs on the wall, found smashed on the bank of the Târnava Mică and pieced back together. The oak spiral staircase is one of very few of its kind left in Europe, and on the walls around it hangs the collection of pendulum clocks gathered by the winery's owner. Above it lies the Music Salon, with authentic period furniture and a restored old piano; below, down oak steps dating from 1560, you reach the vaulted cellar where the tastings are held. On the same hill, beside the castle, stands the Roman Catholic chapel built between 1760 and 1769.

### Good to know

The castle belongs to the Jidvei winery. The guided tour of the castle sets off every hour within the opening times, but tastings, lunch and vineyard visits must be booked at least 24 hours ahead and are only run for groups of at least two people; tastings are for over-18s only. The architecture allows neither ramps nor a lift, pets are not admitted on the estate, and accommodation is offered only to large groups.
