## About Kálnoky Castle in Micloșoara

Kálnoky Castle in Micloșoara (Miklósvár) is the former hunting manor of one of the oldest Székely noble families. The Kálnokys were granted the estate at the end of the 16th century, and in 1648 István Kálnoky noted in his diary the start of work on the "stone house" here: a two-storey building with cellar walls more than two metres thick and bastions on three sides, designed with defence in mind. His son Sámuel Kálnoky, Vice-Chancellor of Transylvania, extended and decorated it towards the end of the 17th century.

The building has two faces: from the south it looks like a Renaissance castle, with red andesite door and window frames and an enclosed balcony resting on corbels, while the north façade was given a Neoclassical portico in the early 20th century, with the family arms in its pediment. In 1939 the castle was sold to the industrialist Eugen Savu; it was later nationalised and fell into disrepair.

After 1990 Count Tibor Kálnoky, back from Germany, took the castle on a concession from the town of Baraolt, which owns it, and restored it through the Kálnoky Foundation with Norwegian and EEA funding. In April 2017 the ground floor opened as the **Museum of Transylvanian Life**, which shows how the local nobility lived between the 17th and 19th centuries.

### What you can see

The guided tour takes in the ground-floor rooms, furnished with period pieces recovered, donated or bought by the foundation. The great hall keeps its 17th-century leaf-pattern stucco, rare in Transylvania, and is furnished in the style of the transition from the late Renaissance to the Baroque. The "Lady's House" shows the daily life of a countess, with glassware, fine objects and a corner for embroidery and reading; the "Master's House" brings together weapons from the wars against the Turks and Ottoman carpets. Among the collection's pieces are tiled stoves, painted chests and an original Streicher piano, the same model Brahms played.

In the vaulted cellar an 18th-century castle kitchen has been recreated, now used for festive dinners. Outside, walk around the building to see the bastions, the stone frames and the balcony on the south façade, then the castle park.

### Good to know

The museum is open only from Friday to Sunday; on other days visits are by telephone appointment only. Tickets are not sold at the castle but at the Stone Pub in the centre of the village. In the same village the Kálnoky family also runs Count Kálnoky's Guesthouses, whose guests have the museum included in their programme; the castle occasionally hosts concerts and private events.
