## About Mikó Castle in Olteni

The castle at Olteni (Oltszem in Hungarian), on the northern edge of the village beside the DN12, was built around 1827 by the noble Mikó family, in the Classicist style with Empire elements. Its attribution to Count Miklós Mikó is traditional rather than documented. The surrounding park was laid out towards the end of the 1820s, and the interior walls were painted in the early 1830s. The building stands on the walls of a Roman castrum, whose layout was confirmed by archaeological research in 2025–2026.

Nationalised in 1958, the castle housed a school for children with disabilities from 1973. It was returned to the heirs in 2007, and in 2014 it was bought by Covasna County Council and the commune of Bodoc. The restoration, worth around 20 million lei and co-financed through the PNRR, ran from 2023 to 2026. Since September 2026 it has operated as an external branch of the Székely National Museum in Sfântu Gheorghe and is part of the Route of the Transylvanian Manor Houses.

### What you can see

The exhibition presents the history of the Olteni branch of the Mikó family and of the castle, the men's and women's quarters, the Olteni stud farm and the Trakehner bloodline, Emil Schmutzler's work in the 20th century, and the finds from the Roman castrum. The three cellars beneath the castle can also be seen.
