## About Rhédey Castle

The castle in Sângeorgiu de Pădure, ~15 km from Târgu Mureș, took its present form between 1807 and 1809, when Count László Rhédey rebuilt it partly from the materials of an older 17th-century residence. The estate belonged to the Rhédey family from 1629 and was sold in 1885 to the landowner Rudolf Schuller. The Romanian state bought it in 1935 for administrative use, it was nationalised in 1948 and housed the district administration and then, until 2010, a school. The building was restored with support from the Ministry of Culture.

Countess Claudia Rhédey was born here in 1812; a love story with Duke Alexander of Württemberg ties her to the British royal family, since her granddaughter, Mary of Teck, became queen of Great Britain. Since September 2019 the upper floor has housed the multimedia exhibition "Mysteria Residentiae Rhédey", and visits are by guided tour only.

### What you can see

The exterior is a white two-storey building with a high tiled roof, stucco window surrounds and a wrought-iron balcony on the main façade. Inside, the upstairs exhibition fills five rooms, with interactive mirrors and projections about the life of Claudia and the Rhédey family. One memorial room is dedicated to the village of Bezidu Nou, now under a reservoir, while the ground floor has a tourist information centre and an exhibition of paintings by Victor Datu. Across the street, the Reformed church holds Claudia Rhédey's grave in its crypt.
