## About Sturdza Castle of Miclăușeni

Sturdza Castle of Miclăușeni is the most spectacular boyar palace in Moldavia: a white Neo-Gothic building with turrets, battlements and finials, raised by George Sturdza and his wife Maria (daughter of the statesman Ion Ghica) between 1880 and 1904 on the site of an 18th-century manor house. Part of the old manor survives inside the east wing. The façade decorations, with the Sturdza family arms (a lion holding a sword and an olive branch), were made in 1898 from Maria Sturdza's drawings, under the guidance of the architect Iulius Reinecke.

The Sturdzas assembled here one of the largest private libraries in the country, some 60,000 volumes, along with collections of weapons, medieval costumes and archaeological finds. During the First World War the castle served as a military hospital, and George Enescu played among the beds of the wounded. Ecaterina Cantacuzino, the founders' only daughter, donated the castle, the church and the park to the Diocese of Roman in 1947, to become a convent.

The communist authorities closed the convent in 1953; in the decades that followed the castle housed a care home for children with disabilities, and two fires, in 1968 and 1985, destroyed the roof and the last pieces of original furniture. Returned to the Metropolis of Moldavia and Bukovina in 2001, the castle went through several rounds of restoration; the most extensive, begun in 2024, rebuilt the roof and façades, and the castle reopened to visitors at the end of August 2026.

### What you can see

The interior is visited with a guide: the rooms on the ground and first floors, with ceilings and walls painted in tempera with geometric and floral motifs, carved panelling and doors, tiled stoves and the marble staircase. One room in the east wing has stones with inscriptions in Latin, Church Slavonic, Arabic and Romanian built into its walls, among them the dedication stone of the old church of 1782.

Outside, walk around the castle to take in all the coats of arms and stone tracery on the façades, the arcaded, battlemented terrace at the corner of the building and the ponds of the dendrological park, with its old trees and rare species. Next door are the Sturdzas' estate church from the 1820s, with its Baroque iconostasis, the family cemetery, where the founder George Sturdza is buried, and Miclăușeni Monastery.

### Good to know

The interior reopened in August 2026 after the first stage of the restoration; conservation of the interior wall paintings continues into 2027, so some rooms may be closed temporarily. There is a restaurant in the park and a guesthouse run by the convent (Casa Macrina).

## Don't miss

- The main façade, with the Sturdza coats of arms in high relief and the stone rosettes above the windows, drawn by Maria Sturdza.
- The terrace with Gothic arcades and battlements at the corner of the castle, the building's most photographed angle.
- The room with inscribed stones in the east wing, including the dedication stone of the old church of 1782 and inscriptions in Latin, Church Slavonic and Arabic.
- The estate church from the 1820s, with its Baroque iconostasis, and the founder George Sturdza's grave in the family cemetery.
- The ponds of the dendrological park, mirroring the old trees of the estate.
