## About Teleki Castle in Gornești

Teleki Castle in Gornești (Gernyeszeg) is one of the most important Baroque residences in Transylvania, built by the Counts Teleki on the site of an older fortress. The estate came into the family's hands in the 17th century through Chancellor Mihály Teleki, and the present castle was built between 1772 and 1803 for Count László Teleki, to plans by the architect Andreas Mayerhoffer, who also designed the Grassalkovich Palace at Gödöllő.

The U-shaped building has 52 rooms and 365 windows, with a domed pavilion rising in the centre above the reception hall. The family lived here until 1949, when the castle was nationalised and used for decades as a sanatorium. It was returned in 2011 and, after almost three years of works funded through the Romania Atractivă programme (under the national recovery plan) with 4.6 million euros, it reopened to the public on 16 July 2026; the official inauguration took place on 1 August.

### What you can see

The guided tour, about 50 minutes long, goes through the restored rooms and the museum exhibition on the history of the castle and the Teleki family, supplemented with digital and interactive content. The route also includes a room with Baroque frescoes discovered during the restoration, unknown until then even to the owners.

Outside lies the historic park, laid out at first as a French garden and later turned into an English landscape park, with centuries-old trees, a lake and avenues. Sandstone statues brought from Budapest in the early 20th century stand among the trees: Juno, Neptune, Venus and Bacchus, alongside satirical figures.

The castle is open daily, including Mondays, from 10:00 to 18:00. On the grounds are the 112 Coffee café and the museum shop, and the halls can be hired for events. Photo and film shoots are done through paid packages booked in advance.
