## About Urmánczy Castle

In the centre of Toplița, next to the Mureș, Urmánczy Castle was built between 1903 and 1906 for Jeromos Urmánczy, a landowner of Armenian origin, to plans by the Tyrolean architect Vigilio Giacomuzzi. It has a single building phase and the air of a medieval castle: a plinth of rough stone, a tall, steeply pitched roof covered in shingles, and smaller and larger wings projecting from the central volume.

The family lived here only briefly. In the First World War the building became the headquarters of the Romanian army's 14th Infantry Division; the owners returned around 1920 and stayed until 1945, when their property was confiscated. From 1952 the hospital's maternity and surgery wards were housed here, and in 1971–1972 the entrance under the tower was removed and the tall hall divided into two storeys. The town hospital built in 1986 covered the main façade, and blocks of flats rose in the park that once ran down towards the centre. After an ethnographic museum opened in 1998, the castle was returned to the family's descendants in 2009 and is looked after by the Positive Transylvania Association.

The rehabilitation, consolidation and conservation works, funded from the PNRR through the "România Atractivă" programme, were formally accepted on 31 August 2026, and the association announced the official opening to the public.

### What you can see

The features that define the castle are seen from outside: the water tower with its helmet roof at the right-hand corner of the main façade, with the carriage passage at ground level, the stone plinth, the balcony with a carved wooden parapet, the shutters and the wavy frieze under the eaves of the winter garden, inspired by the Secession. The original plan gathered around a tall central hall the reception rooms, the dining room opening onto the loggia, the winter garden facing the Mureș and, upstairs, the children's and guest rooms, reached by a wooden staircase. How much of this layout has returned after the restoration is not detailed on the official website; the association also announces an exhibition about the family and the castle's different eras.

### Good to know

Visits are by prior appointment only, on Saturdays, for groups of at least 5 people. Many tourism pages still list the castle as closed for restoration or with weekend hours from past years; the official announcement of 31 August 2026 is the valid one, so call before you set off.
