## About Roman Fort of Arutela

Arutela was built in AD 138, in the reign of Emperor Hadrian, in the Bivolari Glade on the left bank of the Olt, where the valley narrows towards the Cozia gorge. Its garrison were archers from the East, the Surii sagittarii, and its job was to guard the Roman road that followed the Olt valley and to control the crossing to the north. It was used until the first half of the 3rd century and then abandoned, after a flood of the Olt badly damaged it. Since 2024 the fort has been part of "Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia", inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The ruins were discovered in 1888, and Pamfil Polonic dug here in 1891–1892, uncovering the Roman baths too, fed by mineral springs. The building of the railway at the end of the 19th century covered part of the fort, and the baths disappeared. The stone fort measured about 61 × 61 m, with rounded corners and walls 1.6 m thick. In 1982–1983 it was rebuilt to a design by the architect Aurel Teodorescu, with the first praetorian gate (porta praetoria) reconstructed in Romania, flanked by two towers.

### What you can see

The low walls of the fort, the traces of the buildings inside and the praetorian gate with its two towers, which you can climb by the wooden stairs to the sentry walk. The fort stands on the shore of the Olt reservoir, with Cozia Monastery close by and the wooded slopes of Cozia National Park above. On one of the ridges, about 1 km to the north, at Piscul lui Teofil, the foundations of a Roman watchtower were found, part of the same defence system, and when the water drops, the rock known as Trajan's Table is visible.

### Good to know

The fort was rehabilitated with PNRR funds (the project "Rehabilitation of the Arutela Roman Fort and Development of Multifunctional Spaces", about 12.4 million lei, beneficiary Călimănești Town Hall), and the Ministry of Culture announced it in August 2026 as returned to the public. The project included conserving the ruins, correcting the gate reconstructed in the 1980s, a visitor route along the Roman roads uncovered inside, a pavilion with reflective facades, an open-air amphitheatre and a car park. The result drew criticism: many visitors and specialists found the current look, with smooth surfaces and new elements, too far from the ruins as people knew them, and the photos below show the fort before the works. No visiting schedule is published; check with Călimănești Town Hall before you go.
