## About Roman Fort at Bologa (Resculum)

The fort at Bologa, known in antiquity as Resculum, was built right after the Roman conquest of Dacia, in the time of Trajan, and watched over the approach to the province from the west. It is the south-western starting point of the limes of Dacia Porolissensis, with a road to Porolissum. Three phases can be told apart: first a fortification with an earth rampart and timber palisade, then an enlargement, and at the start of the 3rd century a rebuilding in stone, on a plan of about 133 × 213 m. The units stationed here included the cohorts I Aelia Gaesatorum and II Hispanorum. A vicus, a civilian settlement, grew up alongside, and the ruins of a Roman bath have also been studied nearby. Archaeological research took place in 1930, in the 1970s and in 2012–2013.

Archaeologists have identified the headquarters building (principia), the commander's residence (praetorium) with underfloor heating, granaries (horrea) and barracks, as well as the north gate. The finds include coins, fine pottery, stamped roof tiles, jewellery, weapons and equipment, and fragments of window glass, which is rare in Dacia.

### What you can see

The site is in the place called Grădiște, on flat ground beside the river, ringed by hills. The walls are mostly buried under earth and grass, so at the surface you mainly see the banks and ditches that mark the enclosure, in an open-field landscape. The ruins of the Roman bath are nearby.

### Good to know

On the same valley, on the opposite bank of the Săcuiu, stands Bologa Fortress, a medieval stronghold that is a separate attraction. As of the latest reports in 2023 the fort had no signposting, and the "România Atractivă" programme platform lists it as open to visit, with free entry. No schedule is published. The photos below were taken in 2011.
