## About Roman Fort at Buciumi

The fort at Buciumi was built at the start of the 2nd century, after the conquest of Dacia, on a plateau at the northern edge of the village, at the place called "Cetate" or "Grădiște". Its garrison guarded the pass along the Rag valley, which led over the Meseș ridge towards the peoples beyond the Empire, and the ancient name of the settlement was probably Docidava. The first fort, of about 2 ha, had an earth rampart with a timber palisade and a defensive ditch. At the start of the 3rd century it was rebuilt in stone, on a plan of 134 × 167 m, with towers at the gates and corners. The units recorded here include the Second Cohort of Britons, about a thousand strong, and cohorts raised in Hispania and Ituraea.

Systematic excavations in 1963–1976 uncovered the headquarters building (principia), the commander's house (praetorium), two granaries and the soldiers' barracks, as well as inscriptions, weapons, coins, oil lamps and a great deal of pottery, now shown at the County Museum of History and Art in Zalău. Since 2024 the fort has been part of "Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia", inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

### What you can see

The site is laid out as an open-air museum: you enter through the Porta Praetoria and walk along the via principalis and via praetoria to the principia, where column bases and the steps at the entrance to the great hall can be seen. The enclosure walls, the gate towers and the main buildings were consolidated and largely rebuilt in works completed by 2016, so the plan of the fort is easy to read. From the plateau there are views towards the Meseș hills.

### Good to know

In 2016 the National Limes Commission criticised the works because they replaced much of the original masonry with new walls. The photos below date from August 2012, before these works. The Porolissum complex at Moigrad has the same administrator and the same prices.

## Don't miss

- The principia, the headquarters building, with its column bases and entrance steps.
- The Porta Praetoria, the main gate, with its towers, where the visit begins.
- The via praetoria and via principalis, the streets that divide the fort, with barracks and granaries on either side.
- The view from the plateau towards the Meseș hills, where the Roman frontier ran.
